The Emerging Man

A giant bald man in swimming goggles is pulling himself out of the bay onto the Yas Bay promenade, behind Etihad Arena. Only the top of his head shows, the water at the middle of his goggles, and his two hands gripping the stone edge of the quay. The head is 8 metres from chin to crown, most of it under water. He is sprayed concrete on glass-fibre rebar, made to stand salt water and heat, with a smooth terracotta finish. The artist is Fathima Mohiuddin, Fatspatrol, and he has been there since 2021. At night a lamp on the shore shines on him.
