The chequered flag
When a race on the map finishes, the W hotel over the track celebrates: its gridshell turns into a chequered flag in the winning car’s colour and waves over the whole shell. By day the squares are painted on the glass, at night the shell lights them. Then the helicopter flies home to its pad with the camera on board, the flag waving behind it, and the flag comes down once it lands. It is a nod to the first Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in 2009: when Sebastian Vettel won, the real shell lit up as a chequered flag.
